It is definitely permissible to go on your own way and welcome abstract and creativity into your work. Now, unity should be one of your main goals in your design. It is actually more understood and applied as consistency and repetition. Repetition actually builds unity by repeating the elements that you will use in your design like plants, plants groups and decors. Consistency on the other hand creates unity through the different elements of the landscape when they are put together to create a whole. If you have ever come across a landscape design that carried different colors and sizes of boulders, then you have seen that unity was not made by this particular element. This is actually just one of the many examples but the principle applies to all other elements such as groups of plants and materials. There is a simple way to create unity in your landscape and it is through creating theme gardens. Coming up with a theme garden is a lot easier if you relate it something that you are greatly interested in or have passion for. For example, if you have a liking for butterflies, you can make a theme using plants that will attract butterflies or use statues, ornaments and other d?cor that are related to butterflies. The best way to express unity is by adding it to at least one element in your landscape and preferably more.
